The travel bug is something many of us have experienced. It can hit at any time, like an earthquake, but a lot more desirable! With so many places to visit and see, it can difficult to choose a destination. Well, if you’re a music lover, one must-see is Austin, Texas. Austin is an oasis of music diversity in a state more commonly known for country music, great expanses of land, USA pride, and arguably the best barbeque on the planet. I was lucky enough to visit beautiful Austin a couple years ago in March, a month when the weather is warm but not stifling, and the occasional impressive storm lights up the sky and fills it with sounds of rolling thunder.
Walking through the streets, I was impressed with the incredible friendliness of the people of Austin, and the laid-back, almost hipster feel of the place. It’s easy to see why musicians would be drawn to this location, and how the music scene was able to grow into what it is today, a main hub for fans of a great variety of music genres, from country and rock, to blues and jazz, to new wave and punk, just to name a few.
So how did Austin get its nickname as the “Live Music Capital of the World?” It earned it. Austin hosts over a dozen music festivals including the infamous South by Southwest (SXSW), the largest music festival of its kind in the world, which has had over 2,000 bands and artists perform, and several tens of thousands of attendees since its inauguration in 1986. The next SXSW is in March, only a month away and it lasts for over a week, so if you’ve been bit by the travel bug, it’s not too late to check it out!
Can’t make it to SXSW, or prefer something a little more intimate? No Problem. Austin is also the home of over 100 live music venues. Walk down the street, and you will find plenty of options to stop in and enjoy some live music, great food, great drinks, and friendly people.
If you’ve been feeling that itch to travel, check out Austin, a city full of friendly fun, delicious food, and one of the most expansive music scenes in the country. It’s an experience of a lifetime, one you will forever remember and cherish.
